BRADFORD Services for educator Spurgeon Frank Boyd, 71, former head of the biology department at Union University, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hunt Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Elliott and the Rev. Mike Burczynski officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Prospect Cemetery near Hollow Rock. Mr. Boyd died Tuesday at Veterans Administration Hospital in Memphis after a long illness.

He graduated from Central High School in Bruceton, and received his bachelor's degree from Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City. He held the master's degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville and had done additional study at the University of Georgia, Arizona State University and University of Oregon. He also was a former professor of biology at Belmont College in Nashville and at Memphis State University before his retirement in 1978.

He served in the 9th Division of the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II. Mr. Boyd was a member of the Tennessee Education Association, Retired Teachers' Association, American Institute of Science and the National Wildlife Federation. He was a member of the Tennessee Academy of Science, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Association of University Professors, and Beta biological society. He was a lesson writer for the children's division of the Baptist Sunday School Board, and was a deacon and Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church.

He leaves his wife, Mrs Pauline Boyd of Bradford; a daughter, Mrs. Don Steen of Corinth, Miss.; a son. Dr.
Thomas Boyd of Baldwin City, Kan.; a sister, Mrs. Frank Fristoe of Bruceton; and two grandchildren, Chris Boyd and Sally Steen. [Source: Jackson Sun]

Mr. Jerry Leslie Cole, 83, of Buena Vista, died Tuesday, August 20, at Baptist Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were conducted on Thursday. August 22. at the Oak Grove Baptist Church. Interment followed in the Church Cemetery. Dr. T. T. Crabtree and Reverends Tony Wiggins and Johnny Boyd officiated.

Mr. Cole was a retired foreman for the Carroll County Highway Department and a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church, where he had saved as the Church Clerk since 1949.

He is survived by his wife, Minnie Belle Crossett Cole and
several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers who served were Billy Gooch, Russell Orr, Bernard Butler, Steve Joyner, William Farmer, and Williara Cole.
Dilday Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Services for J.D. Cooper, age 82, of Hollow Rock, were held Thursday, June 16th, 2 p.m., at the Faith Baptist Church, Hollow Rock with Rev. Steve Davis officiating. Dr. Steve Atwood, Rev. Joe Harris, Mr. Ray Smith and Mr. LeRoy Seagraves assisted with the officiating. Burial was in Prospect Cemetery. Dilday Funeral Home was in charge of services.

Mr. Cooper died Monday, June 13th, at 11:15 p.m. at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon.
He was born May 11, 1912, in the Spanish Grove Community of Carroll County, son of Charles Preston and Armenta (Minnie) Elizabeth Brinkley Cooper.
He was a retired farmer and owner and operator of the Hollow Rock Gin Co. for thirty-six years and Rosser Gin Co. for seven years.

Mr. Cooper was a member and honorary deacon of Faith Baptist Church and had served as an active deacon for forty-seven years and several other places of service during his lifetime to the church and the Carroll-Benton Baptist Association. He had been a Gideon for twenty-four years. He was named to the Board of Directors of the Home Bank of Hollow Rock in 1945 and later to the Board of the Bank of Huntingdon. He had served with the Carroll County Equalization Board, Republican Executive Committee, ASCS Committee, Farm Bureau Director, and Mid-South Ginners Association.

Mr. Cooper is survived by his wife of 54 years, Allene Rosson Cooper; one daughter, Lillian C. Rice; two sons, Charles D. Cooper and Gregory N. Cooper, all of Hollow Rock; two granddaughters, Alicia Rice Sills of Jackson and Kayla D. Cooper of Hollow Rock; two grandsons, Michael Madden Cooper and Brent Cooper Rice both of Hollow Rock; a step-grandson, Jacob Davis of Hollow Rock; three great-grandchildren, Emily, Andrew and Bradley Sills all of Jackson and two sisters, Kate Hall of McKenzie and Bessie Baker of Martin.

Mr. Cooper was preceded in death by one sister, Hazel Cole, and two brothers, Charles Virgil Cooper, Sr., and Robert Buford Cooper.

The eight pallbearers were Michael Cooper, Brent Rice, C.V. Cooper, Jr., Jackie Hall, John Baker, Gary Baker, Melvin Hargis and Billy Sills.

Honorary pallbearers were Roy Tarwater, William Smothers, Sam McCoy, Howard Johns, and Bill Eubanks, and his fellow Gideons and Deacons.

Joe Ted Herndon, 79, died Wednesday, May 13, at his home in Nashville. Services were held on Friday, May 15, at 2 p.m. at Bruceton Methodist Chruch, with Rev. William Franklin officiating.

Mr. Herndon was a member of Bruceton First Methodist Church and a member of Bruceton Masonic 731.
He is survived by his wife, Anita Paschall Hicks Herndon; a daughter Karen Miller, of Shrewsburg, MA; a son, Soseph L. Herndon of Key Biscayne,m Florida; two brothers, Albert Ray Herndon of Paucah, Kentucky, and Lucian Houston Herndon of Humboldt; and four grandchildren. [Source: Carroll County NEWS LEADER]

VIRGIL LEON HURT 1913-2006 [McKenzie Banner]
BRUCETON: Virgil Leon Hurt, 93, died Saturday, September 23, at Jackson Madison County General Hospital. Funeral services were Tuesday, September 26, 2 p.m. at Bruceton Funeral Home with Bro. Steve Whitworth officiating. Burial followed in Prospect Cemetery in Hollow Rock.

Mr. Hurt was born March 10, 1913 in Martin to the late William. E. Hurt and Pearl Turner Hurt. He was a retired conductor for Seaboard Coast Line Railroad, a member of Bruceton First United Methodist Church and Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Jewel Hurt, Charles Hurt and Lewis Hurt. Survivors include his spouse of 72 years, Audrey Louella Nance Hurt of Bruceton; one daughter, Brenda Jones of Johnston, South Carolina; three sons, Bobby Hurt of Memphis, Bruce Hurt and Kendell Hurt, both of Bruceton; two sisters, Bonnie Bayless and Mary Nell McMackins, both of Bruceton; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

BUENA VISTA: Services for Elva Kee King, 91, were at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 9 at Bruceton Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Clarence Noles officiating. Burial was in McAuley Cemetery.

Mrs. King, retired elementary school teacher for the Hollow Rock-Bruceton Special School District, died Wednesday, April 7 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon.
She was born August 18, 1912 in Buena Vista to the late William Henry Kee and Lula Ozier Kee. She was a member of Mt. Nebo Baptist and Bruceton Order of the Eastern Star #314.

Survivors include a sister, Sue Beachboard of Madison, several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lee “Pete” King.

Final Rites For Wade Pinkley Held Friday. Weldon Wade Pinkley, 54, died April 12 at his home.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Freda Mae Ballard Pinkley; two sons, Wallace of Nashville, Kenneth of Huntingdon; a daughter, Mrs. Terry Blakemore of McKenzie; five grandchildren, also his mother, Mrs. P. M. Pinkley and a brother, McCall Pinkley of Bruceton.

Services were at Dilday Funeral Home April 14, 1967 at 10 a.m. with the Revered J. L. Fortner officiatiing. Burial was in the Old Hollow Rock Cemetery with Dilday Funeral Home in charge. Pallbearers were Ross McKinney, James McLemore, Howard Carter, Avlon Ballard, Elijah Ballard and Loman Ballard.
