Former McKenzie Mayor, Gene Anderson, Died Monday

Former McKenzie Mayor Gene Anderson died at 11:30 a.m. Monday, April 15 at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville from pneumonia. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church with Bro. Dennis Trull officiating. Burial will be in Carroll Memorial Gardens. Visitation was held Tuesday from 5:00 - 8:30 p.m. at Brummitt Funeral Home in McKenzie. Active in city government for twenty-five years, Mr. Anderson served as mayor from 1994 until 1998. He served as chairman of McKenzie Water Commission for 16 years, a position he held at the time of his death. He had been a long time member of First Baptist Church in McKenzie. He retired from AT&T as a systems engineer in 1989, after which he worked as owner and president of AAA Builders.

Mr. Anderson attended Hollow Rock-Bruceton school system and graduated from high school at Central High School in Bruceton. After graduation, he attended Engineering Institute in Atlanta, Georgia and graduated from Denver Tech in Denver, Colorado. He also attended Bethel College in McKenzie. He was also active with the youth of the community, having served as a baseball coach on different age levels for several years. He was elected president of the league two times, and president of the Booster Club for one term. For many years, he volunteered his time and services as the score keeper at McKenzie Rebel football games. In October 2000, Mr. Anderson was diagnosed as having a very rare type of cancer. In the spring of 2001, he was named honorary chairman for McKenzie's Relay For Life, a fund-raising event for the American Cancer Society.

Larry "Gene" Anderson 04/16/02 Larry “Gene” Anderson, 66, died Monday morning, April 15, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville from pneumonia. He retired from AT&T as a system engineer in 1989. Since that time, he had worked as owner and president of AAA Builders. Mr. Anderson was very active in community activities, serving as chairman of the Water Board for 16 years, Alderman for four years, and Mayor for four years for the City of McKenzie. Mr. Anderson has been a longtime member of First Baptist Church in McKenzie. Services will be held today (Wednesday, April 17) at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with Bro. Dennis Trull officiating. Brummitt Funeral Home in McKenzie is in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Anderson is survived by his wife, Willie Mae Fitzgerald Anderson; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Dianne Anderson, and their two sons, Bruce and Clint; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Malissa Anderson, and their children, Mark II, Luke and Anna, all of McKenzie. Another son, Steven, preceded him death. He was also preceded in death by his father, James Wesley Anderson. Mr. Anderson is also survived by his mother, Florence Kizer Anderson of McKenzie; two brothers, James Fred Anderson of McKenzie and William Earl Anderson of Paris; and nephews and nieces.

BUENA VISTA: Betty Jean (Bailey) Cole, 73, died Saturday, November 29, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon. Funeral services are Tuesday, December 2, at 11 a.m. at Chase Funeral Home with Bro. Steve Davis officiating. Burial will follow in McAuley Cemetery.

Mrs. Cole was born August 13, 1935 in Buena Vista to the late Fred Bailey and Eva Estelle (Spoon) Bailey. She graduated on May 8, 1954 from Bruceton-Central High, was a retired factory worker for Thomas Bradford Company and a member of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church.

Survivors include: her husband of 54 years, James Donald Cole; one daughter, Donna (Dan) Thompson of Buena Vista; one son, Russell (Cindy) Cole of Huntingdon; one sister, Shirley (Harry) Ragsdale of Raleigh, North Carolina; one brother, Sam (Sue) Bailey of Huntingdon; and two granddaughters. JERRY KENNETH BOSWELL, 57, of La Grange, Tenn., formerly of Bartlett, 30-year switchman for Illinois Central Railroad, died Monday in Memphis. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home in Somerville, Tenn., with graveside services at 3 p.m. in Tri-City Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Florence, Ala. He was a Baptist and had served in the Army. Mr. Boswell, the husband of Carolyn Herrod Boswell, also leaves a son, David Brian Boswell of Memphis, and a sister, Maudeline Markham of Bruceton, Tenn.

Died: Tuesday, April 22, 2008, in East Texas Medical Center-Athens
Services for David Stanley Butler, Senior Master Sergeant, U.S. Air Force, Retired, are scheduled for 2:00 P.M. Sunday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Kyle Henderson and Rev. Richard Palmer officiating. Burial with full military honors are scheduled for 2:30 P.M. Monday at Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home.

Mr. Butler died April 22, 2008 in Athens.
He was born July 31, 1936 in Buena Vista, Tennessee to the late Landrum Stanley and Willie Mae Wood Butler. Sgt. Butler served the United States Air Force 22 years with two assignments in the United Kingdom and a Southeast Asia tour. While in Europe he had the privilege of playing professional football two years for the Air Force. Special units that were very meaningful to David's career were the Strategic Air Command, Tactical Air Command, Charge Officer for NCOIC. He worked jointly with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police while in North Dakota. David was recipient of the Top Cop Performance Award while serving in Southeast Asia.

After retiring in 1976, David moved to Athens and began working for Pioneer Machine and Tool Company which later sold to Bell Rubber Company. He retired as Plant Manager in 1991. He was a long time member of First Baptist Church and formerly served as third grade Sunday School Director and fifth grade Sunday School Teacher. David's passion was to encourage and instruct youth of all ages which he did so tirelessly working with 4-H and Teenage Baseball. He earned the title "Papa Bear" not only from his grandchilddren but the many young people who grew to love and admire him.

He was preceded in death by a son David Chris Butler in 1964. The family wish to give special thanks to Dr. Doug Curran, Lakeland Medical Associates and East Texas Medical Center for their compassionate care during David's last illness.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Gene Butler, Athens, son, Joe Butler and wife Carmen, Athens, daughters, Cindy Smith and husband R.D., Kim Echols and husband Steve, Tina Furr and husband Guy, all of Athens, brother, Jiommy Butler, Bruceton, Tenn., grandchildren, Jennifer, Blake and Haley Butler, Katie, David Cody, Sarah, Anna and Mary Beth Smith, Jessica Kirksey, Lauren Rogers, Brittney Rogers, Kinnsey Echols, Alex and Preston Furr, great grandson, Hunter Butler, numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Coke “Skipper” Moore Crawford, 82, passed away on Tuesday, August 27 in Whitefish, Mont., following a brief illness. He leaves behind two sons and a daughter- Coke Jr. (Daughter-in law Debbie) Rick, and a daughter Debi Smith (Son-in law Josh), eight Grandchildren- Cory, Zenna, Jordan, Coke Jr. Ill, Curtis, Campbell, Emily, and Kyle; and six Great Grandchildren- Kaylan, Reign, Evalynn, Zoe, Tegan, and Ember.

Coke was bom August 31, 1936 in Jackson and raised in Bruceton, where he was an accomplished athlete exceling in Football and leading the Bruceton Tigers to an undefeated season in 1953- 54. After high school, Coke enlisted in the United States Air Force becoming an electronics technician. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1958. In 1967 Coke moved to Moscow, Idaho where he lived with his family for many years. Coke was a cub-scout master, Boy Scout Master (conducting multiple 50 miler scout outings), a high school Football official, and enjoyed the Outdoors of Northern Idaho fishing and camping.

In his professional career, Coke managed a shoe store for several years in Moscow, Idaho at the David’s Shopping Center. And upon the closing of David’s Shopping Center he went to work at the University of Idaho in the intramural department.
In 2011 he moved to Big Fork, Mont., to be near his daughter Debi and her family. Debi took wonderful care of her father and was by his side right up to his death.

There was a Graveside service Tuesday, September 3 at 11 A.M. at the Spellings Cemetery in Buena Vista. Bruceton Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements. [Source: Bruceton Funeral Home]

BRUCETON, TENN. – Sherlie Ann Glosson, 76, of Bruceton died Friday May 25, 2012 at her daughter’s home in Kingston Springs. Funeral services were Sunday, May 27 at Bruceton Funeral Home with burial in Prospect Cemetery.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ronna Gangluff of Kingston Springs, and Mrs. Pamela Stewart of Pegram, Tenn.; one son, Franklin Martin, Jr. of Kingston Springs; three sisters, Shelba Herring of Warren, Ark., Ms. Chessie Wardlaw of Camden, and Ms. Martha Lou Holley of Hollow Rock; one brother, Jerry Glosson of Hollow Rock; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Susan Martin; four sisters, June Chapman, Beatrice Underwood, Mary Nolan Glosson and Charles Glosson.

Mrs. Gayle Ann Smith, 73, of Huntingdon, passed away Friday, August 21, at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon. Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 23, in the chapel of Chase Funeral Home with Brother Lloyd Ray Rich officiating. Interment followed in the McAuley Cemetery. Mrs. Smith was born on July 15, 1936, in Buena Vista to the late William Noah Kee and May (Butler) Kee. She was a retired self-employed hair stylist, and a member of the First Baptist Church in Huntingdon. She was also a beloved Nana to all.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Smith of Huntingdon; a daughter, Kim (Keith) White of Huntingdon; four sons, Jeff Goble of Huntingdon, Tony Goble of Franklin, Mark Smith, and Brian (Jennifer) Smith, both of Milan; three sisters, Maxine Kortvely, Mattie Lou Fowler, both of Bruceton and Margurite Diel of Paducah, KY; three brothers, James Lance Kee of Lebanon, Kenneth Kee, and Larry Kee, all of McKenzie. She also leaves 12 grandchildren, Shea Smith, Konstance Moore, Jillian Goble, Kennedy White, Justin Goble, Nycole Goble, Amanda Goble, Hannah Goble, Dena Smith, Mya Smith, Macy Smith, and Blake Cantrell; and four great-grandchildren, Kelson Moore, Karter Moore, Aubrie Harris, and Shiloh Goble. She was born May 28, 1935 in Carroll County, daughter of the late W.H. and Ollie Ocie Faust King. She belonged to Prospect Baptist Church in Hollow Rock.

Survivors include her husband, Scotty Haskins; two daughters, Debbie Martin of Union City and D'Anna Vancleave of Samburg; a son Stan Haskins of Troy; two sisters , Sue Wiser and Wanza Bonds, both of Hollow Rock; five brothers, Edwin King of California and J.R. King, Billy King, Merrill King and Lee King, all of Hollow Rock; five grandchildren, Johnny Lee Martin and Ashley Martin, both of Union City, Heather Vancleave of Samburg, and Mgen Haskins and Patrick Haskins, both of Troy.

He was married to Virginia Carol Snyder Lowe. He had two children, Elizabeth Paige Kisber of Nashville and Donald Christopher Lowe of Savannah, Ga. He had four brothers, Gene Lowe, Gaylon Lowe and Leonard Lowe, all of Bruceton, and Roy Lowe of Hollow Rock, and two sisters, Lucille Grisson of Bruceton and Velma Merrell of Jasper.

He was born July 27, 1935 in Benton Co. to the late Dewey Lindell and Lillian Cole Luther.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Greta Hollingsworth and Priscilla Hicks. Mrs. Sue Todd, 80 of Clarksburg, Tennessee, passed away Saturday, November 21, 2015 at NHC in Milan, Tennessee. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at 11:00AM in the Chapel of Chase Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Farmsville Cemetery. Bro. Philip Halter and Bro. Michael Butler will officiate the service. Mrs. Todd was born June 5, 1935 in Hollow Rock, Tennessee to the late Fred and Lyndal (Wilson) Prince. She was a homemaker and a member of the Clarksburg Missionary Baptist Church.

She is also preceded in death by one brother, Charles Ray Prince, and three sisters, Evelyn White, Joyce Hale and Virginia Cherry.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Glyn Todd, two sons, Gary Todd (Teri) of Chattanooga, and Michael Todd (Teresa ) of Yuma and one sister, Rachael Bowden of Paris. She also leaves five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. [Source: Chase Funeral Home]

Audrey R. Pierce 1936 - 1997
October 5, 1936 - November 9, 1997

Mrs. Audrey Randel Peirce, 61, of Bruceton, died Sunday, November 9, at Baptist Memorial Hospital Huntingdon of heart failure. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, November 11, at 3 p.m., at Bruceton Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend James Daniel officiated Interment followed in the Prospect Cemetery in Hollow Rock. Mrs. Pierce, a seamstress for Henry I. Siegel Company, was born October 5, 1936, to the late Freeman Elton and Lois May Webb Randle. She was a member of the Bruceton First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Loyce Pierce, who died June 20, 1997. She is survived by one son, Alan Pierce of Waverly; one sister, Kay Randle of Waverly; and two grand-children, Jennifer and Michael Pierce of Waverly. Pallbearers who served were Ronnie Smothers, Eddie Wheatley, Mike Warren, C. D. Wade, L. M. Lowe, and Ralph Pierce. Honorary pallbearers were Tom Huddleston, Kirk Huddleston, and Russell Huddleston. Bruceton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements, (910) 586-2512.
