Anita Hicks Herndon
August 27, 1917 - August 19, 2002
Anita Hicks Herndon died Monday morning, August 19, 2002, of complications from pneumonia in Miami, Florida. Born in Camden, Tennessee on August 27, 1917, she was the second child of Dr. Garvin Priestly Hicks and wife, Grace Paschal of Bruceton, Tennessee.
She attended school in Bruceton and college at Milligan College, and graduating from Murray State University in 1937. She married Joe Ted Herndon, also of Bruceton, and the two then began a long and successful teaching career at Greenfield High School in Greenfield, Tennessee. Later, they relocated to Bruceton, when they both taught High School for over twenty years, and both receiving their Masters Degrees from George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville. Mrs. Herndon was renown as an inspiring and challenging teacher of English. She also served as Guidance Counselor. In 1968, Mrs. Herndon taught at West Junior High in the Metropolitan Nashville Public School System, and in 1969 she became the Assistant Dean of Students at Peabody College. Later she was promoted to Dean of Students there. She retired in 1979 to Bruceton.
In 1982, she and Mr. Herndon relocated to Nashville, where they remained until the death of Joe Ted Herndon in 1992. In 1994, she relocated to Miami, Florida to the home of her son, Joseph.
She was a member of the Bruceton United Methodist Church and was an organist and teacher there. Her husband, Joe Ted Herndon, and her only sister, Brenda Mae Orr of Bruceton, and Murray, Kentucky, predecease her. Survivors include her daughter, Karen Herndon Miller of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, and Joseph L. Herndon of Miami, Florida. Her grandchildren include Dr. Thomas Bryan Miller of Gardner, Massachusetts, Elizabeth Miller of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, Meredith Herndon of Nashville, Tennessee, Elliott Herndon of Nashville, Tennessee, and Gabriel Anthony Herndon of Miami, Florida. Her great-grandchild is Julia Miller of Gardner, Massachusetts.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Saturday at the Bruceton Funeral Home Chapel with interment in Camden City Cemetery. Bruceton Funeral Home
