Estie Register Ripley
May 20, 1919 - February 15, 2013

Funeral services for Mrs. Estie Register Ripley, a ge 93, teacher and musician, will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, February 20, 2013 in the chapel of Lawrence-Sorensen Funeral Home. Burial will follow i n H ollywood Cemetery.

Mrs. Ripley died February 15, 2013 in Lawrenceville, GA.

Estie Ripley was born May 20, 1919 in the Buena Vista Community of Carroll County, TN, daughter of the late Arthur John and Ollie Rogers Register. She graduated from Central High School in Bruceton, TN in 1937, received her BS degree from UT Knoxville in 1940 and her Masters degree from Memphis State University in 1955.

She began her teaching career in 1940 in a one room schoolhouse, with students in the first grade through high school. For thirty-three years she worked with children in the public primary schools of Tennessee. She is remembered for being a living example of the lessons she taught.

Mrs. Ripley was a lifetime member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, a professional honorary society of women educators. She served as president of the Alpha Omicron chapter.

Mrs. Ripley married William Ira Ripley on October 25, 1942 and celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1992. Bill, as her husband was known, died on November 11, 2001. They were dedicated members of First Baptist Church of Jackson, TN where she taught Sunday School for 50 years. She also sang in the sanctuary choir and served as president of her Sunday School Department for many years.

In retirement, Estie and Bill enjoyed table tennis, shuffleboard, and walking with the Jackson Recreation Department. They also won many medals in the Senior Olympics. They particularly enjoyed the Do-Dah Band, a music group directed by Mrs. Sylvia Pinson Gortney.

In addition to the Do-Dah Band, Mrs. Ripley was well known throughout the Jackson area for her willingness to entertain on organ, piano and accordion. She played in churches, nursing homes, and for special events encouraging the audiences to sing along. For many years, she was a regular performer at the Old Country Store.

Surviving her are her son, William Arthur Ripley and wife Dr. Karen Ripley of Stone Mountain, GA; grandson, Dr. David L. Ripley and wife Marian; great grandchilden, Bryan, Michael, Caroline and Christopher all of Chicago, IL; grandson, Jonathan P. Ripley and wife Mea of Tucker, GA; grandson, W. Alan Ripley and wife Jessica; great granddaughter, Madeleine all of Chicago, IL; granddaughter, Mary Joanna Ripley of Stone Mountain, GA; sister-inlaw, Mrs. Lula Kate Estes of Dyersburg, TN; nephew, Tom Estes of Palm Bay, FL; niece, Marilyn Estes Armstrong of Dyersburg, TN; longtime special friend, Helen Morgan of Jackson, TN.

In lieu of flowers, Love Gifts may be s ent to the children’s ministry of the First Baptist Church in Jackson.

Visitation will be from 12 noon until the service 2 p.m. at Lawrence-Sorensen Funeral Home, 731-424-2424
