John H. Rodes
September 11,1919 - April 21, 1968

John H. Rhodes, 48, 607 N. Rockford Ave. died at 9 p.m. Sunday, April 21, 1968 in Sweedish-American Hospital after a long illness. Born Sept. 11, 1919 in Lexington, Tenn., son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rhodes. Lived 14 years in Rockford, coming here from Beloit, Wis. Married to the former Phyllis Nelson in Geneva, May 27, 1944. Employed as news editor of radio station WRRR. Veteran of World War II serving in the Army. Member of Zion Lutheran Church and Illinois News Broadcasters Association.

Survivors include: his widow, Phyllis; one son, Thomas, Rockford; two daughters, Mrs. George Tarhke, Rockford, and Tina Rhodes, of home.

Services at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 23 in FRED C. OLSON MORTUARY, 1001 3nd Ave. with the Rev. Gordon Nelson, chaplain of Sweedish-American Hospital, officiating. Burial in Scandinavian Cemetery. Local Newscaster Dies of Lukemia

John H. Rhodes, 48, widely known radio newscaster, did at 9 p.m. Sunday after a year's bout with lukemia. Rhodes 607 N. Rockford. Ave., established the News Department at Radio Station WRRR 13 years ago.

FORMER PRESIDENT
The newsman, a former president of the Illinois News Broadcasters Association, died at Swedish-American Hospital, where he had been a patient since April 3. Rhodes died almost a year to the day after an automobile accident in which he was injured while en route to cover the Belvidere tornado. The accident was April 22, 1967. He never fully recovered from the effects of that accident and within four months, he was diagnosed as having lukemia. Rhodes who because of his illness was out of work for a while last summer, returned to the radio station last fall and remained on the job until recently.

SERVED IN ARMY
Born in Lexington, Tenn., Rhodes had lived in Rockford for 14 years. He served with the Army during World War II. Rhodes married the former Phyllis Nelson on May 27, 1944, in Geneva.

Survivors include his widow Phyllis; a son, Thomas, Rockford; two daughters, Mrs. George Tarhke, Rockford, and Tina, at home.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today in Fred C. Olson Mortuary, 1001 2nd Ave. Burial will be in the Scandinavian Cemetery.
