Doy Freeland

Doy Lee Freeland
July 23, 1931-Januray 6, 2014
Dr. Doy Freeland(1931 - 2014)

Dr. Doy Freeland was born in Bruceton, Tenn., on July 23, 1931 to Esther and Otis Freeland. He was so tiny the doctor didn't think he would live, but his grandmother had raised 13 children and pulled him through with biscuits soaked in water. Years later he ran into the doctor who delivered him, and he was amazed that he lived.

One of the joys of his life was dancing and he never left a party until the last song was played. He put himself through medical school by working two jobs while carrying a 4.0 grade average. They say doctors aren't good patients. He was a very good patient. Never complaining while bearing his pain. He entertained the nurses and aides with his stories and jokes. Having practiced medicine for 49 and a half years, he had a lot of tales to tell. (When he started practicing they had office hours three days a week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and three days a week from 9 to 5 or when the last patient was seen.) They dispensed medicine in the office back then, did surgeries, set bones, delivered babies, and did just about everything. He loved being a doctor. One of his great gifts was his ability to diagnose an illness.

He also enjoyed golf with his buddies, quail hunting with his dogs, playing cards, and his email jokes.

There will be an empty place in the hearts of his wife, family, and friends that only he could fill, because he was always there for them.

He leaves behind his wife, Jane; brothers, Shorty Freeland (Ann) and William Freeland (Martha); brother-in-law, Bob McMullin; nieces, Teri Wood (Bob), Jana Davis (Tim), Betsy Evans (Dale) and Jennifer Hawtoff (Ivan), Debbie Owens and Donna Milam (Bobby); nephew, Rev. Ted Freeland; great-nieces and nephews, Jill Talbert (Daniel), Brian Wood, Laura Wood, Sarah and Russ Milam and Stephanie Hamlin; great-great-nieces and nephews, Audrey and Foster Talbert and Emily Hamlin; cousins, Msgr. Jack McEvilly, Connie Maxwell (Elwood) and Jayne Ann Wood (Frank), Kathy McEvilly, Rex Pierce, Sue and Jerry Koehler, Tim and Janet McEvilly, Dan McEvilly, Sandy and Jimmy McEvilly.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and aides at Memorial Hospital for their exemplary care.
