Pastor John Walter Lewis age 58 of Dyersburg, TN. died Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, TN. He was the Pastor of Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church in Dyersburg, TN. He retired from the United States Airforce after serving 24 years as was a MSGT.

Arrangement are entrusted to McCreight Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Sunday, August 29, 2021 12:Noon-1:55p.m. at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church 208 St. George Ave. Dyersburg, TN. Funeral Service will follow at 2:00p.m. Officiating this service will be Minister Janet Morgan. Serving as Pall Bearers will be the Deacons & Trustees of Pilgrim Rest M.B. Church. Deacons, Ray Eison, Frank McLin, George Mitchell, Frank Snipes, Billy Williams, Willis Wright, Trustees, Carlos Doss, Larry Williams, Rawlin Fowlkes, Terry McCreight, Gerry Fisk, Dossie Grandberry. Burial will be held in the Old Pisgah Cemetery in Bruceton, TN. 1051 Old Pisgah Road.

John Walter Lewis was born on October 30,1962 in Camden, TN. He is the son of the late Jennie Frances Lewis and the late John Eldridge Lewis. John was raised in Bruceton, TN.

Pastor leaves to cherish his memories his five Children; Dr. Kyndra Cleveland (Ashton) of Nashville, TN., Mariah Lewis, Tallahassee, Florida, Jasmin Lewis, Janai Lewis, John Michal Lewis all of Dyersburg, TN. Sister, Minister Janet Morgan (Frank) of Dyersburg, TN. Pastor Lewis was preceded in death by his Parents, Brother, Jeffrey Lewis.

Pastor Lewis hobbies include reading, weight lifting, cardio training, riding motorcycles and four wheelers, deer hunting and watching movies. He attended school and graduated from Bruceton Central High School in May of 1981. In October of 1981, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and went to basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in February of 1982. John was an Aircraft Electrical and Environmental Systems Mechanic in which he worked on a wide variety of aircraft. His tour duty assignments were RAF Lakenheath England, Mountain Home Idaho, Keflavik Iceland (twice), Grand Forks North Dakota, Mildenhall England and Hurlburt Field Florida. After twenty four years of service, he retired from the Air Force in the rank of Master Sergeant.

While stationed at Mildenhall England, John served as an Ordained Deacon prior to accepting his call to preach the Gospel in December, 1997. He preached his first sermon that same month during a Watch Night Service. He was a member of Pastoral Outreach Team, at Striving for Perfection Ministries, in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. He served on this team for seven years in the capacity of Juvenile Detention Center, Jail, Prison, and Convalescent Home Minister.

He moved from Crestview, Florida to Dyersburg, TN. in June of 2012. He and his family joined Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church in October of 2012 under the leadership of the Late Pastor W.L. McCadney. John was installed as Pastor of Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church on Sunday, August 30th, 2015. One of his greatest joys was to see members of the congregation mature and grow spiritually in the Lord. He established the "Hands of Blessings" Outreach Feeding Ministry in January of 2016. Warm meals are prepared for the community the third Saturday of each month. In March of 2018 he assembled and organized a four man Jail Ministry Team, including himself, from Pilgrim Rest to provide weekly Bible Class at the local Jail.

Pastor Lewis demonstrated exceptional leadership during the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Church Services was cancelled one Sunday, March 22, 2020, due to the spread of the Coronavirus in the city. The following Sunday he began live streaming the service so that the congregation could continue to receive the Word of God. The members of Pilgrim Rest M.B.
