James Leaborn "Junior" Abbott,
Jr.
June 30, 1950 - February 10, 2025
This world lost a true-blue Tennessean, a hardworking man of grit, heart, and
country pride—James Leaborn Abbott, Jr. He passed on February 10, 2025, in Tulsa, Oklahoma,
leaving behind a legacy as strong as the cotton fields he grew up running through in Bruceton,
Tennessee. Born June 30, 1950, in Buena Vista, Tennessee, to James L. and Christine Abbott,
James was a country boy through and through. His mama always said it was a miracle he survived
his childhood—he was a wild one, tearing through the fields, church, and anywhere else he could
find a little trouble.
James spent 31 years at HIS as a shipping supervisor in Bruceton, where just about everyone
knew him—and chances are, if you lived in that town, you worked for him at some point. He
worked until the company closed in 2000. Afterward, he moved to Nashville in 2005 and became a
Brinks driver, a role he carried out with the same dedication and pride he brought to all
aspects of his life. He spent the next ten years as an expert marksman before retiring in March
2015 and moving to Ponca City, Oklahoma.
James was a man of the land, moving to Ponca City in 2015 to be closer to the horses he and his
wife, Doreen, loved so much. He loved fishing and had a green thumb that could grow the best
tomatoes in town and a knack for anything with a small engine—whether it was a tractor, a
motorcycle, or something he tinkered with just for the fun of it. An outdoorsman at heart,
James loved the open road, the freedom of his motorcycle, and the spirit of the Old West. He
spent the next ten years exploring the history of the frontier.
One of the highlights of his adventures was attending the 60th anniversary of Gunsmoke in Dodge City, Kansas, where he met some of the actors and family members from the legendary show. He later traveled to Tombstone, Arizona, to relive the excitement of the O.K. Corral shootout with Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. The pinnacle of his visit was walking up and down Allen Street, a beloved Tombstone tradition he cherished.
James was a devoted husband to Doreen, a loving father to his children, Sandra Tracy Scott,
James Kevin Abbott, and Brian Daniel Abbott, and a proud stepfather to Amelia Helen Vigil. He
also cherished his large and growing family, including seven grandchildren, four
great-grandchildren, and even one great-great- grandson. He is survived by his sister, Janice
Carey, who surely has more than a few stories of her brother’s wild and wonderful ways. Above
all, James deeply loved his parents, his siblings, his children, and every generation that
followed. James Abbott was the definition of a proud American; tough as leather, loyal as they
come, and full of stories that could fill a country song. His love for his family, his land,
and his country will live on in those who knew and loved him.
Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, February 21, 2025 at Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 1675 Pleasant Hill Church Road, Camden, TN 38320 with Bro. Michael Butler officiating. Burial to follow in the Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends in the Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church Friday, February 21, 2025 from 12:00 P.M. until time of service.[Source: Bruceton Funeral Home]
